New Nauticam Housings Released

Several Nauticam housings have been released recently, expanding on the already successful line-up of underwater housings.

The Canon 60D is a great upper entry-level DSLR camera with many of the features of the semi-pro 7D. The NA-60D housing from Nauticam continues and improves upon the ergonomic and innovative housings people have come to expect from Nauticam. With continuously curved surfaces, user-friendliness and exuding solidity and refinement, the Nauticam NA-60D is a condensed housing with all the latest design improvements, all made possible by high tolerance, fine machining technologies.

The NA-600D, for the Canon 600D, builds on the success of the NA-550D housing with a new design that keeps the best of the 550D housing but adds new design elements to further enhance functionality and ergonomics. New features include a multi-function thumb lever for Video Start/Stop and programmable AE Lock button (referred to as “*”) and control extensions move the camera’s controls within easy reach of the right and left handles.

Three new housings expand on the very popular micro four thirds series of cameras. Firstly, the Panasonic Lumix GH2 camera has many of the capabilities of entry level DSLRs on the market today, but in the size of a compact. The Panasonic GH2 is loaded with features that make it appealling to the underwater photographer. Rated to a depth of 100m, the new NA-GH2 is a rugged aluminum housing that continues the Nauticam tradition of ergonomic controls and innovative thinking.

An even smaller system is the Panasonic Lumix GF2 and Nauticam’s NA-GF2 housing. Being machined from solid aluminum allows a form fitting small design, the lightest weight possible, and precise control placement to enhance ergonomics. The housing shutter release is extremely sensitive, allowing precise feel of half and full press shutter release positions. Nauticam has also split the “click” and “turn” functions of the command dial into two separate functions on the housing, making these controls easy to operate underwater.

Finally, Olympus E-PL2 shooters now have the option of stepping up to the durability and functionality of a rugged aluminum housing for their camera. The NA-EPL2 housing from Nauticam delivers the advanced functionality of the E-PL2 in style and with the ergonomics that people have come to expect from Nauticam, all in a very compact and lightweight housing.

The Nauticam Micro Four Thirds port system gives the ability to use several Panasonic, Olympus and Leica micro four thirds lenses with all three of these camera/housing combinations. To see the full range of lens and port options available, check out the Nauticam Micro Four Thirds System Builder.

The Sony NEX-5 camera and Nauticam housing has proved a very popular choice for underwater photographers seeking a smaller system without compromising any quality in image and video capture. And we’re sure this new batch of Micro Four Thirds housings will prove just as popular. Use the Nauticam Micro Four Thirds System Builder to get an itemised quote for any of the above micro four thirds cameras and the Nauticam DSLR System Builder to get a detailed NA-60D or NA-600D quote.

With this expanded product range, we think there has never been a better time to upgrade from a compact underwater system to something with greater capability, opening up endless possibilities in capturing the underwater environment. Happy shooting!

Nauticam 45° Viewfinder released

The new 45° Viewfinder from Nauticam has the same great build quality and materials of the existing, popular 180° straight viewfinder. It provides a full view of the camera’s finder at 1:1 magnification and, like the 180° Viewfinder, has a diopter adjustment, accessible via an external knob, to allow for adjustment to suit different eyesight even during a dive.

It’s 45° angle puts you in a comfortable position for precise focusing and artistic composition. The Viewfinder also pivots through 360° against the housing to allow for different viewing angles. This offers distinct advantages when taking close-up pictures close to the sea floor or other similar situations with viewing obstacles.

The viewfinder can be installed and uninstalled in Nauticam housings without tools and can be used with Ikelite, Aquatica, Sea & Sea and Nexus housings via the use of special adaptors. We are now taking orders for the Nauticam 45° Viewfinder.

Nauticam housing for Sony NEX-5 = Digital Nikonos

With the launch of the Nauticam housing for the new digital Sony NEX-5, Nauticam have given a new lease of life to Nikonos lenses. With the Nauticam Nikonos Lens Adapter fitted, you can now use the Nikonos lenses, arguably the sharpest lenses ever produced for underwater photography, on a state-of-the-art digital camera.

NA-Nex 5 housing is made for Sony NEX-5, the world’s smallest, lightest interchangeable lens camera so far, yet the camera has a DSLR APS-C HD image sensor, which means you can compose the same image quality as from a conventional DSLR.

The Nauticam housing design emphasizes a casual, user friendly appearance allowing logical and comfortable controls of the camera. The housing body is machined from graded aluminium and coated with corrosion resistant hard anodize.

It can be used with the Sony NEX E-mount lenses (18-55mm, 16mm and fisheye convertor) or with Nikonos lenses with the help of the Nauticam Nikonos lens adaptor.

A short history of Nikonos

Nikonos is the name of a series of 35mm film cameras specifically designed for underwater photography launched by Nikon in 1963. The Nikonos system was immensely popular with both amateur and professional underwater photographers.

Its compact design, ease of use, and excellent optical quality set the standard for several decades of underwater imaging. What truly set the Nikonos apart from other cameras were its dedicated underwater lenses; they were designed as “water-contact” optics, and are not usable in air. To this day, many consider no underwater camera system can quite match the Nikonos lenses for sharpness and saturation.

Nikon ceased development and manufacture of new Nikonos cameras in 2001, although there is still a large and active used market. With the launch of the Nauticam NEX5, it is likely to spark alot of interest from the many Nikonos users past and present.
